Newlyn is involved in the development of innovative new power generation plants that will simultaneously address the power crisis and enable job creation within the country.

The projects being developed include power generation from renewable resources as well as natural gas. Newlyn has proprietary process technology that results in a lower cost of production coupled with significantly lower CO2 and NOx emissions.


Near-zero emissions export terminal:

Newlyn has designed a near-zero emission export terminal for back-of-port storage and handling of various export mineral ores. The design uses mechanical silos which are closed to the environment, and dispatches to the ships at a rate of 10,000 tons per hour.

The major delays in export logistics are train turnarounds and low ship-loading rates. The Newlyn solution caters for coal, chrome, iron-ore, manganese, and similar mineral ores.

Since the 1960’s, back-of-port solutions for export of mineral ore were done in open stockpiles, thereby causing major environmental issues and product losses.

The Newlyn Concept

The Newlyn design for the back-of-port storage and handling of mineral ore is entirely closed to the environment, hence near-zero emissions and losses.

Included in the design, is storage of mineral ore in specialized silos which have mechanical systems for soft handling of ore, as well as accurate and high-speed discharging of ore.

The entire design enables efficient logistics from the unloading of the train (rotary tandem tippler), pipe conveyor to the silos for storage of ore. Thereafter discharging the silos via pipe conveyors to the ship-loaders at 10,000 tons per hour.

The Newlyn design is first-in-the-world for export of mineral ore and has a footprint of one third of conventional hack-of-port storage.

Newlyn Dry Bulk Terminal


Newlyn is developing 2 state of the art tank farms in Alrode (Ekurhuleni) and Ambrose (Bayhead, Ethekwini).


Fuel will be stored in one of many tanks at the Ambrose terminal and will be distributed via 3 possible methods;

A. Road truck gantry.
B. Rail tanker gantry.
C. National Multi product pipeline (NMPP), at TM1, to our Alrode tank farm.

The final design will include a fully automated switching station, once all terminals are developed, and multiple products are in operation. The final design will have 4 fuel lines from the 2 berths, switched to 4 terminals.

The discharge from the terminals will have 8 lines coming into the switching station, switching into 2 output lines to TM1. The one off-spec line from TM1 will be switched into 4 terminals at the switching station.

The Ambrose terminal will have 15 road loading gantries, and 36 rail tanker gantries, on 3 tracks. Tank sizes of 40.000m³ each. Additive tanks, day tanks, and VRU. All tanks are designed as universal tanks that can store diesel or petrol initial phase storage of 160.000m³.

Maximum truck parking at the terminal, truck drivers ablutions and rest area have been included in the design.


The Alrode tank farm will be fed from the Ambrose tank farm via the NMPP (500m away). Surrounding properties to the terminal have also been procured by Newlyn, for additional staging and trucker ablutions, canteen, and other conveniences.

Fifteen truck loading gantries, and storage for 67,500m³ of fuel will be included.
